Diagnosing and Resolving Check Engine Light Issues

A 2017 BMW i3 REx recently visited our shop with an illuminated check engine light, a frequent concern for owners of this plug-in hybrid. Our advanced diagnostic process identified codes related to leaks and sensor issues within the range extender (REx) system. Using cutting-edge tools like the BMW ISTA+ diagnostic system, we tested the fuel tank and valves, confirming proper valve operation and no fuel in the carbon filter. Notably, this vehicle had a fuel pressure sensor failure a year prior—a common issue in BMW i3 REx models due to corrosion from U.S. gasoline additives. This time, the sensor tested within specifications, ruling it out as the cause.

We replaced the tank vent valve, a critical component prone to failure in the i3 REx’s range extender system. As a proactive measure, we also replaced the non-return valve, known to fail in these models, leveraging the already-disassembled system to minimize labor costs for the customer. This thorough approach ensures long-term reliability and addresses potential issues before they escalate.

Comprehensive Maintenance for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Beyond resolving the check engine light, the BMW i3 REx was due for routine maintenance, including a brake fluid flush and full vehicle inspection. Our team executed these services flawlessly, adhering to BMW’s recommended service intervals, which include brake fluid changes every two years and inspections of components like brake pads, rotors, and cabin air filters. The inspection confirmed all systems were functioning optimally, providing the owner with confidence in their vehicle’s performance.

Nelson’s Automotive is uniquely equipped to service the BMW i3 REx’s 647 cc inline two-cylinder range extender engine and electric powertrain. Our certifications in high-voltage systems allow us to handle the complexities of hybrid and full electric vehicles, from battery management systems to electric motor diagnostics, ensuring compliance with manufacturer standards.
